WWF Malaysia- Mameng survey 20-22th March 2008
|
A team from WWF Malaysia came to Lankayan
Island on 20-22th March 2008 to carry out a study on
HumpHead Wrasse, or the local name Mameng
(scientific name: Cheilinus undulates) Their research
was to determine as a guideline for by Sabah Fisheries
Department undulates). Their research was to
determine to total number or density and average size
of Sabah. Mameng is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the
Mameng in Sabah. Their findings will be used as a
guideline for by Sabah Fisheries Department to
determine the quota of Mameng to be reef exported for
the live reef trade industry in the Sabah. Mameng is
listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN (World
Conservation Union) Red List of Threatened Species. It
is one of the largest of can reef fishes that is seriously
over-exploited for fishing is not lightened.
the international live fish trade. They are slow
to reach adulthood (maturity age: 4-6 yrs) and long-
lived (up to 32 yrs). These characteristics can lead to
their extinction if pressure from over-fishing is not
lightened.
Lankayan Island was chosen to be one of their study
sites as fishing here has been prohibited for years, and
enforcement is consistently carried out. Many small
Mamengs were found around the island, suggesting
that enforcement efforts by Reef Guardian are effective
and the Mameng population is slowly but surely
growing.
