SIMCA's success story at Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington D. C. USA 19-24th May 2009

Reef Guardian was presenting a poster in the special
pre-symposium workshop "Beyong The Obituaries: Success
Stories In Ocean Conservation" at Smithsonian's National
Museum of Natural History on 19-20th May 2009. Consist of
about 50 participants with majoring from North America
were gather and discussed about success measures and
sharing of experiences and knowledge on their works. Reef
Guardian was the only representative from Malaysia apart
from two representatives from our neighbor country
Philippines and a success story from Komodo National Park
Indonesia that presented by the WWF-US. Reef Guardian's
poster outline the brief information of SIMCA formation
and the mechanism that how SIMCA functions. Poster also
included success outcomes and measures that included sea
turtle nesting increased from 2004 to 2008, commercially
important fishes increased, coral cover improved and
maintained, enforcement activities have been reduced illegal
fishers and repeat offences plus the eco-tourism activity
improved which increased conservation fee revenues to
fund more conservation works.

The main symposium: International Marine Conservation
Congress which consist of total 1200 participant and
featured up to 15 simultaneous sessions, a three-day
marine protected area management training course, more
than 20 side events and meetings.
Various talks and issues were presented and discussed in
the symposium. One exciting moment was to meet up with
Dr. Sylvia Earle. Dr. Earle is Explorer in Residence at the
National Geographic Society and called "Her Deepness" by
the New Yorker and the New York Times, "Living
Legend" by the Library of Congress, and the first "Hero
for the Planet," is an oceanographer, explorer, author, and
lecturer with experience as a field research scientist.
