Marine Education Program - SMK Sandakan, Sabah Malaysia

A group of 10 students, aged 16-17 years old, from SMK Sandakan came to Lankayan Island to
participate in Reef Guardian’s Marine Education Program (MEP) on the 19th-20th July 2008. The MEP
includes interesting talks as well as video presentation on coral reefs and marine turtles. There were also
games to illustrate the destructive consequences of illegal fishing methods such as fish bombing and
cyanide fishing and the issues concerning over-fishing. Highlight of the MEP is the snorkeling session,
where students experienced first-hand the beauty of coral reefs and other marine life. When asked, all
participants have never before snorkeled and have never seen corals. The snorkeling session gives the
students that connectivity to appreciate marine life and made it easier for them to understand issues
concerning our ocean. We think that the participants understood the message that we tried to convey. It
is hoped that they will take this knowledge and pass it to their friends.

Read the essays that participants from SMK Sandakan produced in the effort to raise marine conservation
awareness.

If we are to continue to enjoy the ocean, we have to take care of it now.
