Marine Conservation
SIMCA Enforcement
Environmental Control
Marine Education
Eco-diving
Reef Guardian conducts beach patrols every night to safeguard sea
turtles’ nesting process, and to transfer the eggs for hatchery incubation.
The marine team also conducts underwater surveys every year to record
percentage of coral cover, fish abundance, assess Crown-of-Thorn
starfish population, and measure water quality and sedimentation that
may impact on coral growth.
SIMCA is a “NO TAKE” conservation area. Sea patrols are carried out
to control the intrusion of fishing vessels within SIMCA. Sea patrols are
implemented both during day and night time with support from a land
based team that monitors boat traffic within SIMCA using a radar
tracking system.
Lankayan Island has applied a Hydroponics Treatment System (HTS)
since 2004 to treat at least 80% of waste water from the resort chalets,
staff quarters, restaurant, and kitchen washing basins before the water is
discharged. Reef Guardian is ensuring that direct discharge of sewage to
the sea does not occur.
Marine awareness and education is one important component for us. It
is crucial to spread the conservation message to the public and schools
to increase their awareness. Every year, Reef Guardian will select local
schools to participate in our marine education program. In addition,
yearly environmental programs such as “International Clean-Up Day”
will be organized.
Lankayan Island Dive Resort adopts a “Green Diver” policy in order
to avoid/reduce diver impact on fragile coral reefs. All visitors are
briefed on SIMCA rules & regulations upon arrival. Additionally, all
divers will be briefed prior to each dive on the “No touch” and “No
landing on coral” policy. Visitor participation in conserving SIMCA’s
coral reefs is important to us.
