Another Daytime nesting record on Lankayan Island
3 November 2008
Another daytime nesting was recorded this year,
and this time it was a Hawskbill turtle nesting at
2:30pm. A resort guest (Heidi) found the turtle while
it was digging above the high tide mark. The turtle
was quite stable when we checked on her, and
ignored all human presence. The whole nesting
process lasted about 1.5 hours and she laid a total of
132 eggs. We found tags on both flippers with Tag
number MY(S) 4912, indicating that she was from
Seliggan Island, which is about 40 km away from
Lankayan.

Hawksbill turtles are listed as critically endangered
worldwide. This species is often killed for its shell
for ornamental purposes. On Lankayan Island, we
recorded an average of 40-50 hawksbill turtle nests
each year.

Hawksbills spend most of their lives in the coral reef
ecosystem where they find food, shelter and mate.
