Water Quality Monitoring Program
Water quality is monitored around Lankayan, Billean & Tagaipil
Islands on a weekly basis to gather long-term data on environmental
change. Basic physical water quality parameters such as water salinity,
temperature, pH, conductivity and vertical visibility are recorded and
monitored.
Furthermore, sedimentation traps have been installed in permanent
survey sites around Lankayan's reefs to monitor sedimentation rates in
relation to coral cover and mortality.
Hydroponics Treatment System
Lankayan Island has applied a Hydroponics Treatment System
(HTS) since 2004 to treat at least 70% of waste water (grey and
black water) from the resort chalets, staff quarters, restaurant,
kitchen's washing basins before discharge. This is to ensure that
direct sewage discharge into the sea, which might induce
eutrophication, does not occur.
Hydroponics Treatment System is a hybrid application utilizing
the basic principles of bacteria supported biological filtration in
which ammonia from sewage discharge is converted to nitrite
and then to nitrate. The nitrate component is removed by
hydroponics plants. The concept of HTS is to ensure that
discharge water is free or low concentration of nutrient contents.
The effectiveness of HTS has been continuously assessed and
evaluated based on the nutrient content levels (ammonia,
phosphate and nitrate) and pH on monthly basis.
