Reef Guardian Sdn. Bhd
Education & Outreach Program
“No Take” marine reserves, such as SIMCA, are a perfect place for educating the public in marine
conservation issues as SIMCA is designed to maintain in full the natural life and processes in the sea.
Environmental studies are not compulsory in Malaysian schools. Therefore, Reef Guardian is trying to
increase environmental awareness by organizing marine education programs for our local school students,
where we introduce the students to marine life and our concept of marine conservation.

In year 2008, we planned to sponsors students from 6 local schools to participate in our marine education
program at Lankayan Island. We believe that real-life experience will benefits the students more because
the sea is different and the real educational value of marine life is its contrast to our terrestrial knowledge.
The revelation of understanding this fact provides a special level of interest to anyone. In addition,
participating students are encouraged to convey their new knowledge to other students, teachers and
parents. We hope by initiating an interest in them, they will strive to discover more knowledge and
enhance their awareness level. Indeed some of the most fascinating and worthwhile lessons come from
thinking about why, where, when and how.
