Reef Guardian Sdn. Bhd
Ecotourism
Lying within SIMCA, the Lankayan Island Dive Resort (LIDR) is
operated according to environmentally conscientious principles.
LIDR's commitment to marine protection is reflected in its water
conservation and waste management policies (monitored by Reef
Guardian, see Environmental Conservation section), and it was
awarded the Green- Resort Award in 2005. LIDR's environmentally
friendly operation helps to minimize the discharge of pollution and
waste that is harmful to reef and marine life, and helps to maintain
pristine surroundings that attract tourists from around the world.
LIDR minimizes damage to corals by installing permanent buoys at
selected dive sites, and enforcing a no anchoring policy for dive boats.
Lankayan is a popular destination for divers who come to
experience the underwater macro-life, purported to be one of the best
in the region. Other dive attractions include wrecks that shelter
numerous fish species, colourful varieties of sea fans and corals (hard
and soft), and sightings of turtles, sharks, and whale sharks during
certain times of the year. Each year, thousands of tourists arrive at
Lankayan, the majority from Italy, Germany and United Kingdom.
Through a briefing session upon arrival and slideshow presentations,
guests are informed of Lankayan's unique conservation area status
and encouraged to follow the resort environmental policies. Reef
Guardian's information centre also provides material for conservation
education, and staff are available to provide additional
information/advice.
